When Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy, was buried in November 1963, almost no family members or friends came to his funeral. When no one was available to carry the coffin, officials turned to the reporters who had attended to cover the event. The journalists put down their notebooks, took up the handles of the casket, and served as pallbearers.
