Saladin Dies Nearly Penniless Funeral

Before Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt, died in 1193, he had given away almost all his wealth to his poor subjects, leaving his estate with just one piece of gold and 40 pieces of silver. Those remaining coins were not enough to cover the cost of his own funeral. The man who had ruled vast territories and led major campaigns during the Crusades left almost nothing behind for himself.
