FDR’s Affair With Lucy Mercer

FDR’s Affair With Lucy Mercer

Franklin D. Roosevelt, who later became the only four-term U.S. president, carried on a long-term secret affair with Lucy Mercer, the former social secretary of his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt. Eleanor discovered the relationship in 1918, and although the Roosevelts stayed married for political and personal reasons, Lucy remained connected to FDR’s life in varying degrees for years afterward, including being present at Warm Springs when he died in 1945.
