In 1985, the University of Oxford broke with tradition and voted to refuse an honorary degree to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as a deliberate protest against her government’s cuts to higher education funding. Oxford had previously awarded this honorary degree automatically to all prime ministers, so the decision publicly singled her out.
