Northumbria Caffeine Decimal Point Disaster

Northumbria Caffeine Decimal Point Disaster

In March 2015 at Northumbria University, two sports science students in a caffeine study were accidentally given 30 grams of caffeine instead of the intended 0.3 grams after staff misplaced a decimal point while calculating the dose on a mobile phone. The massive overdose, previously known to be potentially fatal at just 18 grams, left them in a life-threatening condition and required intensive care and dialysis. The university apologized in court for the botched experiment and was fined Β£400,000 for the health and safety breach.
