Viggo Mortensen only agreed to play Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings after his 11-year-old son, a fan of the books, urged him to take the role. On set, Mortensen performed his own stunts and insisted on using a real steel sword instead of a lighter prop. Over the course of the films, he bonded so strongly with the two horses he rode that he bought both of them when production ended.
