Doctors classify more than 300 different types of headaches, yet only about 10 percent have a clearly identified cause. The brain tissue and skull themselves never generate this pain, because they lack nerves that register pain. Instead, the pain must come from other structures in the head and neck, which helps explain why tracking down the exact cause is so often difficult.
