During the 12-year shoot of Boyhood (2002–2014), director Richard Linklater’s daughter, Lorelei Linklater, grew tired of playing Samantha and asked him to kill off her character so she would not have to continue. He refused because a sudden, dramatic death would clash with the film’s quiet, naturalistic portrait of everyday life. Instead, she stayed in the cast, and her character aged on screen alongside the rest of the family.
