Older turn signals in cars clicked because thermal flashers or electromechanical relays physically moved as they cycled the lights on and off. In many modern cars, computers trigger the signals through silent solid-state electronics, so the car plays an artificial clicking sound through the speakers or uses a separate relay under the dash to recreate the familiar noise.
