When future U.S. president Herbert Hoover was born in 1874, his father, a rural Iowan blacksmith, proudly announced, “We have another General Grant at our house!” in honor of the Civil War hero then serving as president. Hoover’s father did not live to see whether his bold comparison would come true, dying nearly fifty years before his son entered national office.
