In the early 1990s, Spanish gambler Gonzalo Garcia-Pelayo began recording thousands of roulette results at a casino in Spain and feeding them into a computer. His analysis indicated that certain numbers came up more often than pure chance allowed, revealing a biased wheel that gave him a statistical edge. Garcia-Pelayo used this information to target his bets and eventually won about β¬600,000 from the casino. When the casino took him to court, the case failed, and the ruling held that the casino should fix its own wheel rather than punish a player for exploiting its flaw.
