Andrés Escobar Own-Goal Retaliation Killing

On June 22, 1994, Colombian defender Andres Escobar accidentally scored an own goal in a World Cup match against the United States in Pasadena, contributing to Colombia's 2-1 loss and their shock elimination from the tournament. Ten days later, in the early hours of July 2, he was confronted outside a bar in Medellín, where a heated argument about the own goal escalated in the parking lot.

Gunmen fired multiple shots into Escobar, and witnesses reported that one of them shouted "Goal!" each time he pulled the trigger. Escobar died shortly afterward in the hospital, and authorities later convicted cartel bodyguard Humberto Muñoz Castro of the murder, sentencing him to prison.
