In 1910, American doctor Hawley Harvey Crippen became the prime suspect in London after police found human remains buried in the cellar of the home he shared with his wife, music hall performer Cora Crippen. As the inspector stepped up his investigation, Crippen fled England with his mistress, traveling under assumed names on a steamship bound for Quebec.
The ship's captain grew suspicious of the couple and sent a wireless message to Scotland Yard, giving the inspector enough time to sail on a faster liner and reach Canada first. When Crippen arrived in Quebec, the inspector boarded his ship, calmly greeted him on the dock, and promptly arrested him for his wife's murder.
