Total Recall Cut From X-Rating

Due to its intense graphic violence, Total Recall (1990) initially received an X rating from the MPAA. To bring it down to an R, the filmmakers cut several brutal moments, including Thumbelina stabbing Helm to death with a bowie knife, a lingering shot of Richter's dissected arm, and a more graphic version of Quaid's ambush of the scientists as he flees the implant apparatus. Those trims toned down the gore just enough to secure a theatrical release with an R rating instead of the more restrictive X.
