In the 1970s, Steven Spielberg offered action star Steve McQueen the leading role in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). McQueen turned it down because he said he could not cry on cue for a key emotional moment written into the script. Spielberg even offered to remove the crying scene to keep McQueen in the role, but McQueen refused and told him it was the best part of the film.
