Crow Tribe Mourns Custer Dead

During the Great Sioux War of the 1870s, the Crow tribe backed the United States in its fight against their traditional enemies, the Lakota. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, Crow scouts rode with George Armstrong Custer and later mourned the deaths of Custer and his men. According to accounts, people of the Crow tribe said they could only sleep peacefully without fear of Lakota attacks after the Lakota were finally defeated.
