On July 4, 2022, Kazuki Takahashi, the 60-year-old creator of Yu-Gi-Oh, went into the water off a beach in Okinawa as a riptide pulled a girl, her mother, and a U.S. soldier into danger. U.S. Army Maj. Robert Bourgeau, a scuba instructor at the site, fought the current to bring the girl and her mother into the shallows. During the rescue, witnesses saw Takahashi enter the rough water to help (unknown to the soldier), catching only brief glimpses of him before he disappeared beneath the waves. Two days later, the Japanese Coast Guard found his body.
