In ancient Greek mythology, Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory, had a pool of water named after her in the Underworld as a counterpart to Lethe, the River of Forgetfulness, and souls could drink from Mnemosyne before reincarnating to remember their past lives. Some underworld traditions describe two choices for the dead: drink from Lethe to erase all memory, or drink from Mnemosyne to preserve awareness of who they once were.
