John Williams First AFI Composer

In 2016, legendary film composer John Williams became the first person ever to receive the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award who was not an actor or director. The American Film Institute had traditionally reserved this top Hollywood honor for on-screen stars and filmmakers, but Williams’s decades of work on scores for films like Jaws, Star Wars, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial pushed them to break that pattern.
