European Badgers Sharing Fox Dens

Across Europe, naturalists have noted that European badgers sometimes share their underground dens with red foxes, raccoon dogs, or even rabbits. In lowland forests of western Poland, a study conducted between 2012 and 2014 and again in 2018 monitored 94 badger setts and found that more than half of red fox and raccoon dog litters were raised in dens cohabited with badgers. The researchers reported that this cohabitation did not reduce litter sizes for badgers, foxes, or raccoon dogs.
