Off the coast of Long Island, New York, the U.S. government uses remote Plum Island, a highly restricted Department of Homeland Security facility, to run Pentagon-backed cyber war games on the power grid. Every six months, DARPA ferries specialists to the island, where they practice responding to a worst-case scenario in which hackers knock out a large section of the U.S. electric system. On the island’s isolated grid, teams work to jumpstart dead infrastructure while fending off simulated cyberattacks.
