In 2016, two recreational divers in Israel stumbled upon a 1,600-year-old Roman shipwreck off Caesarea and spotted bronze statues and coins bearing the image of Emperor Constantine the Great. They reported the find to the Israel Antiquities Authority, and marine archaeologists recovered thousands of coins and a rich cargo of bronze statues and metal artifacts from the seabed. The authority described the hoard as the biggest discovery of marine Roman artifacts in Israel in 30 years.
