In 1511, Spanish sailor Gonzalo Guerrero was shipwrecked along the Yucatán Peninsula and captured by Mayan forces, who gave him to a Mayan lord as a slave. Over time, he earned his freedom, assimilated into Mayan society, and rose to become a respected warrior under the ruler of Chetumal. Guerrero married a Mayan woman, raised a family, and fought in several campaigns against Spanish expeditions. He died in battle in the Sula Valley of present-day Honduras in 1536 while fighting Spanish attempts to conquer indigenous lands.
