The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum estimates that more than 6,000 ships and 30,000 lives have been lost across the Great Lakes of North America. The long record of disasters spans from the loss of the schooner Invincible in 1816 to the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975. In that time, the Whitefish Point area of Lake Superior alone claimed at least 240 ships. Lake Superior contains about 10 percent of the world's surface freshwater and holds the remains of roughly 6,000 shipwrecks.
