In 1904, Swedish sailor Carl Emil Pettersson was shipwrecked off Tabar Island in what is now Papua New Guinea when his vessel sank on Christmas Day, and local islanders took him in. They brought him to their king, Lamy, whose daughter, Princess Singdo, fell in love with him, and in 1907 Pettersson married her. He entered the copra trade, founded a coconut plantation called Teripax, and after Lamy died, he took over as ruler and was later widely described as the king of Tabar Island.
