Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, both aunt and sister-in-law to Tsar Nicholas II, saw her life change in 1905 when her husband, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, was assassinated. After his death, she left the imperial court, joined a convent in Moscow, and founded a religious community devoted to serving the poor and sick, even selling her own wedding ring to support the work. She spent the following years living simply and focusing on charity instead of royal privilege. Despite her devotion, Bolshevik forces arrested her after the Russian Revolution and murdered her in 1918.
