When he became president, Dwight D. Eisenhower allowed his son, Army officer John Eisenhower, to serve in the Korean War only on the condition that he promise never to be captured alive. John deployed to Korea during the final phase of the conflict and served his tour while his father directed the war from the White House. He completed his deployment and survived the war.
