On 3 September 1950, during the Battle of Tabu-dong in Korea, Sergeant Eduardo C. Gomez crawled about 30 yards across an open rice field to attack an enemy tank. He climbed onto the vehicle, pried open a turret hatch, and dropped a live grenade inside, killing the crew and knocking the tank out of action. As he withdrew, he was wounded, but he refused medical attention and returned to his position to keep firing on the attacking force. His actions helped protect his company's perimeter under heavy fire and later earned him the Medal of Honor.
