Ethiopia sent troops to the Korean War as part of the UN Command in the form of the Kagnew Battalions, 3,158 men in total, of whom 121 were killed and 538 wounded. Drawn largely from the elite Imperial Bodyguard Division, these infantry units joined U.S. and other UN forces on the front lines and fought in some of the warโs toughest battles. Throughout their deployments, they never faced defeat in battle, and not a single Ethiopian soldier surrendered. The Kagnew troops also earned respect for a strict code of never leaving their dead behind, carrying fallen comrades out under fire rather than abandoning them.
