During the Vietnam War, American soldiers fought a brutal battle for Hill 937 in the A Shau Valley that they nicknamed Hamburger Hill. They chose the name because the intense, grinding combat made them feel like they were being "chewed up like hamburger meat." For ten days, U.S. forces attacked the steep, heavily defended slopes in fierce fighting.
