During the Vietnam War, some American soldiers already serving in Vietnam claimed conscientious objector status rather than continue fighting. By formally declaring themselves conscientious objectors, they challenged their role in the conflict from inside the military, not just at the draft board. In some cases, this status allowed them to resign from the armed forces instead of remaining in combat units.
