During the Vietnam War, U.S. Army officer Hugh Thompson Jr. ordered his men to point their guns at American soldiers when he saw them attacking Vietnamese civilians at My Lai. He used his helicopter crew to shield the villagers and made it clear that his men would protect them from further fire. By turning his guns on his own side to defend unarmed people, he helped put a stop to the My Lai massacre.
