Runner Walks To Olympic Trials

In 1928, Black distance runner Dolphus Stroud qualified for the 5000-meter Olympic trials in Boston but had to get there on his own. He spent 12 days walking, running, and hitchhiking to reach the city, arriving only six hours before his race. Exhausted and malnourished from the journey, he collapsed during the sixth lap.
