Lincoln Wins Presidency Without South

On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the first Republican president, winning the election entirely with Northern and Western votes. His name did not even appear on ballots in 10 Southern slave states, yet he still secured a decisive Electoral College victory. He did it with just 39.8 percent of the popular vote.
