One Last Tavern Drink Tradition

In 18th-century London, condemned criminals leaving Newgate Prison for execution at Tyburn were allowed to stop at a tavern for "one last drink." In 1724, highwayman Joseph Blake drank so heavily on his way to the scaffold that by the time he reached the gallows, he slurred his final words.
