North Korea Admits Japan Abductions

In the 1970s and 1980s, a series of unexplained disappearances in Japan led some people to believe that North Korean agents were kidnapping citizens and taking them to the DPRK. Experts and officials largely dismissed these claims as a conspiracy theory, and North Korea denied involvement. In 2002, that changed when Kim Jong Il publicly admitted to the abductions and apologized for the plot.
