Democritus Proposes Atomic Theory

Around 460 to 370 BC, the Greek philosopher Democritus asked what matter was made of and argued that everything could be broken down into extremely small units. He called these units atoms, believing they combined and separated to form all material things. Although his idea lacked experimental proof at the time, it became the earliest known form of atomic theory and influenced scientific thought centuries later.
