In January 2019, 29-year-old Grant Amato was unemployed and living with his parents, Chad and Margaret, and his brother, Cody, in Chuluota, Florida. He had secretly stolen their credit cards and savings, spending around $200,000 on a Bulgarian cam model he met online, which led his family to confront him and cut off his access to money and the internet.
On January 25, prosecutors said Amato shot and killed all three of his family members in his home, then staged the scene to look like Cody had murdered their parents. A jury convicted him of three counts of first-degree murder in 2019, and the court sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
