On the island of Hawaii, a small insect called the Kilauea lava cricket is the first animal to show up on fresh, cooled lava flows from the island's volcanoes. It lives only on these new, barren lava fields, feeding and surviving in a place where almost nothing else can. Once vegetation takes over the lava field, this species disappears and is not seen anywhere else.
