In 1973, during the U.S. energy crisis, President Richard Nixon skipped Air Force One and boarded a regular United Airlines flight from Washington to Los Angeles. The flight was temporarily designated Executive One to mark the presence of the sitting president. It remains the only time a serving U.S. president has flown on a commercial airline.
