Black Ranger Casting Backlash

Black Ranger Casting Backlash

In 2013 in Los Angeles, TMZ asked original Black Ranger Walter Jones about the racist color-coded casting on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Jones said the show did not start that way, noting the original Yellow Ranger was Latina, not Asian. He also said hip hop was a requirement during Black Ranger casting, which fed the stereotypes viewers later saw. The interview spelled out why the series ended up looking stereotyped even if the first lineup did not match those assumptions and the producers didn't even realize the colors might be considered racist.
