Roman Doorway Deities (Janus, Cardea)

In late antiquity, Romans had so many different gods that Augustine of Hippo noted that they had at least 3 different gods to deal with the doorways: Forculus for the door, Limentinus for the threshold, and Cardea for the hinge. He mocked the arrangement as needless specialization, arguing that one doorkeeper would suffice and using Cardea's hinge duty to show how far Roman polytheism went.
