In 1865, Major Henry Rathbone sat beside President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre and was wounded trying to stop John Wilkes Booth. Years later, while living in Hanover, Germany, Rathbone's mental health collapsed. In 1883, he murdered his wife, Clara Harris, in front of their children. Authorities declared him insane and confined him to an asylum, where he died in 1911.
