In 1979, Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris (a.k.a. the Toolbox Killers) recorded the torture and murder of Shirley Lynette Ledford, creating the notorious Norris-Bittaker tape. Investigators used the audio as evidence because it captured the crime in real time. The recording is so brutal that trainers have used it to desensitize prospective FBI agents. Authorities have withheld it from public release, and one officer died by suicide after hearing it.
