Theodore Streleski's Campus Murder Protest

In 1981, Karel deLeeuw, a respected mathematics professor at Stanford University, was shot and killed in his campus office by his doctoral student Theodore Streleski. Streleski had spent 19 years unsuccessfully pursuing his PhD and grew increasingly bitter over his academic failures. After murdering deLeeuw with a hammer, he calmly turned himself in to the police and later said he committed the act to protest the university's treatment of graduate students. Streleski served seven years in prison and was released in 1985.
