The 2017 Bubonic Plague Outbreak

In October 2017, Madagascar suffered the deadliest modern outbreak of bubonic plague, a.k.a. Black Death. More than 170 people died, and thousands more were infected as the bubonic and pneumonic forms of the plague spread rapidly through cities and towns. Swift international response and quarantine measures eventually contained the epidemic, but it marked a chilling reminder that the medieval disease still survives.
