The Mongol Empire, founded by Genghis Khan in 1206, became the largest contiguous land empire in history. At its peak, it stretched across much of Asia and into Europe, controlling nearly a quarter of the world's population. Despite its size, the empire fragmented quickly and lasted only about 150 years before splintering into smaller khanates.
