When Star Wars: Episode I-The Phantom Menace premiered in May 1999, millions of fans skipped work to attend screenings. Employment consultants estimated that 2.2 million full-time U.S. employees missed work on opening day. The nationwide absenteeism caused an estimated $293 million loss in productivity.
