Steve Carell's Unique Preparation

When Steve Carell auditioned for the U.S. version of The Office (2005-2013), he deliberately avoided watching the full British original. He had seen only about half of the pilot episode of Ricky Gervais's The Office (2001-2003) before deciding not to continue. Carell feared that studying Gervais's performance as David Brent would subconsciously lead him to mimic it, rather than creating his own interpretation of Michael Scott.
