Arrested Development's Ann Gag

The writers of Arrested Development (2003) originally planned to cast a different actress as Ann Veal, George-Michael Bluth's forgettable girlfriend, in every episode. The recurring gag was meant to emphasize how bland and unnoticeable the character was, even to her boyfriend's family. Ultimately, they kept Mae Whitman in the role, and her awkward interactions with the Bluths became a running joke throughout the series.
